“IW is a life-changer for our guests and staff as well. I firmly believe that IW has its own culture: we treat everyone – clients, colleagues, volunteers, donors – with respect. IW is not just an anti-poverty organization; it's a squad of selfless people who are working tirelessly to bring a smile to every individual's face!”

A Culture of Caring

I would like to share my journey with Interfaith Works (IW) for the past 5 years (and still counting).

I had heard about (IW) from my friends who had worked here. I listened to them talk about how the team culture embraced each one of them. To be honest, I was envious, yet curious. I decided to join IW as a Program Support Staff, providing direct care services to clients at IW Priscilla’s House (PH), a 24/7-staffed facility for medically fragile women.

Clients at Priscilla’s House have experienced several extended episodes of homelessness, and it is difficult for them to trust someone new. I learned that building relationships with clients at PH was not simple. But my colleagues helped me understand our clients and respond to their unique needs with compassion and kindness. It was a lovely journey getting to know the residents – and my colleagues.

My supervisors helped me identify my strengths and encouraged me to apply for other positions within the organization. I remember they said, “It’s hard for us to see you leave Priscilla’s House, but we are happy that you will still be growing with IW.”

When I was at Priscilla’s House, I was only exposed to a small group and didn't realize how significant IW’s impact is on our community. When I accepted the new position with Interfaith Works’ Development (Fundraising) Department, I learned that the caring and kindness I experienced at Priscilla’s House is infused throughout the organization and replicated by the volunteers and donors who make our work possible.

I’ve worked in many places throughout my career but have never felt the sense of belonging and inclusion that I do at IW.
